The Following letters are from Dachsador parents. Pictures are on the Dachsador page.

Hi Sharon,

Hi Sharon,

I hope all is well with you. Carole and I are regular visitors to your web site and were tempted to get another Dachsador from Velvet's last litter. We will drive to Austin if we ever get another. It's hard to believe that Penny has been with us for almost a year. In our case, you certainly exceeded our expectations and surpassed your motto! Penny is a big girl (relatively) now she weighs almost 21 pounds which is exactly what you estimated. Her coat is slightly more brownish today than a year ago, but she is still mostly black. I've attached a current photo.

She is unbelievably fond of people and has never barked in anger at anyone. There is a chance however, that she could lick them into submission. She has an ideal temperment for our family. Both grandsons love her. The youngest (turned one in July and is the photo labeled penny - robby) hand feeds her Cheerios from his bowl and the oldest (turned six in September and is in the photo penny - david) thinks she's his personal playmate. The 'retriever' genes are certainly present. She loves to chase balls bring them back, but needs a little work on dropping them once returned. She'll keep the ball in her mouth and push it against your leg because she wants to play tug of war with it. Any time anyone throws her ball, she retrieves it.

She has been spayed (last January), is current on her vaccinations and is taking heartworm medication on schedule. She is fed Natural Balance Organic Formulas and does very well on it. I just remembered that I still owe you the paperwork and promise I will send it to you.

Carole and I were thrilled to see her on your web site as a Harnavest model. I think that you must have taken the picture just before you left with her for the airport. We think that the flight must have terrified her. She absolutely hates being outside. When she's outside she actually trembles until she's back in the house. We have been unable to make her feel better about being outside.

Speaking of Harnavests, we would like to order another for the coming winter. One made of material similar to the one you gave her for her trip would be terrific. We trust your judgement on color. Here are her measurements:

Neck 13 1/2"

Girth 20 1/2"

Length 20"

Weight 21 pounds

Let us know the cost and we'll send you a check.

Penny is a perfect example of the reason you chose to try the mix. She is muscular through the shoulders and legs, can easily navigate stairs and furniture and has a disposition that is exceptional. We can't thank you enough. Talk to you soon.

Rick

PS: Penny still sleeps with the pink blanket you gave her for the trip.

Hi Sharon,

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for the information on the harn-a-vest. The one you gave Penny for her trip to Cleveland was terrific and used daily throughout the winter last year. We'll mail a check today.

Please feel free to use any or all portions of my email. We can't endorse all facets of your operation enough. It's too bad that Taffy hasn't produced a litter. In our case, this combination has produced an amazing result. I hope you can find a way to continue the mix.

I like the description "chocolate black". Each day she seems to looke a bit browner. We had a contractor ask us "Is she black?" You might recall that I chose Penny from the photos that you took of the litter just to help me decide. Once I saw the two sisters with the white blaze on their chests it was decided. I selected Penny because she was the smaller of the two. I also need to add that I believe that there very few people in the business who would have taken the time and care to make sure I could see individual photos of the litter. It is just one of the many things that make your operation exceptional.

I love the pumpkin store on your home page. We too are honored by the fact that you've placed Penny on the Dachsador page. My oldest grandson (David) will think he's a celebrity. The boys ARE smitten, but I have to tell you, Penny is obsessed with them when they visit.

Take care,

Rick

Sharon ~

Happy New Year!! I hope your holidays were wonderful and your 2008 is fabulous!!

The puppies are wonderful! They were an incredible surprise on Christmas Eve to our family. The kids were blown away that we brought 2 dogs home from our Christmas Eve shopping excursion. You will be thrilled to know that Super Girl did not have an ounce of trouble transitioning into our family. It was like she knew when she walked into our home she knew this is where she belonged. We are so thankful you told us to consider purchasing two. They are a blessing together. She is definitely the Alpha Dog and he knows when to back off.

My children have named them Callie (Super Girl) and Otis. We really went back and forth on keeping her name as Super Girl but I finally talked them into a more girlie name and Callie was the choice. She has turned out to be very mellow and extremely loving. Otis is so darn cute. He always wants to play. He pounces around her all the time to get her going. They really love each other. And, they really love all of us. Our home is located on a large common lot (we are commonly referred to as the Leave it to Beaver home) and everyone says we are the active house. My boys have so many friends that hang out at our home. The dogs love all their friends and their friends love the dogs!!!! We have all acclimated very well and very quick!

Greg loves Otis and Callie. He says they are such good stock!! He speaks very highly of you and Terry. I am going to have Callie spayed on Tuesday morning. Greg has asked me to find out from you what Callie’s shot record etc. is. He knows what Otis has had from him being so young but needs to have a record for Callie to put in his file.

I met another gentleman at Greg’s clinic holding a gorgeous 2-year-old shorthaired dachshund and he loved Otis and Callie. He asked where I got them and he said he bought his from you 2 years ago. I believe his was a Halloween birthday. I’m sorry I don’t recall the gentleman’s name but he raved about you and Terry. Said his wife emailed you regarding housebreaking the puppy and they were thrilled with your help. They housebroke their puppy within a couple of weeks.

This is where I really do need your advice. Housebreaking 2 of these puppies is quite a chore. All of my kids go back to school tomorrow and I really want to be consistent with the pups. I have tried hard for the past couple of weeks but there have been several accidents in the house. I had to go to work and leave them with my kids, which granted they have tried but they are kids. I have had others tell me about crate training and this is really what I want to do. The dogs love their crate and have no trouble sleeping together; they prefer it just like you said. They also eat very well out of the same dog bowl. Any and all advice for house breaking using the crate is welcome. Please help. We also bought the scat mat and it works like a charm. Callie won’t cross it but Otis bless his heart gets so upset when I have left the room they are in that he barks continually and finally can’t help himself and crosses right over the scat mat. What do you do about that??

Again many thanks for such wonderful dogs. We love them very much and they are very much a part of our family.

Xxoo

Ps. Loved the photo of us with the pups on your website.

Life certainly does get in the way of putting off important things---like writing this long-awaited letter! Our household is so enriched by our three beloved babies we got from Sharon's kennel/home. All three of our longhaired dachshunds are such a blessing to our lives.

In August of 2004--six, long months of being "dogless" after our precious 17-year-old longhaired doxie, Sandie, went over to Rainbow Bridge, we found the kennel on the internet and took a short drive to meet Sharon and her "babies" in Rockdale, Texas. From perusing the site, we could tell that we were going to a place that really "cared" for their animals and felt they were part of the family.... all 68+ of them! (You can change the number if you like... I wasn't sure, but it seemed like there were at least that many in there?!) We average about 30 adults now, but with puppies included have reached the 60+ mark! SM

When my husband Kevin and I arrived on that hot summer day, I didn't know what to expect, but knew we wanted to PICK out a puppy to "spoil to death" as well as have it bring us joy and happiness for HOPEFULLY another 17+ years. It felt awkward, at first, when Sharon opened the door to the LARGE, covered, outdoor kennel and everyone felt that they had a voice. There was barking here and there and EVERYWHERE! I was impressed that she knew each and every dog by name, picked up selected ones in different pens we asked about, was THEN "covered" in kisses/licks all over the place, gave us background info, answered all the silly [there are no “silly” questions if you don’t know the answers!] questions we had and showed us the parents of the litters in question even before we had a chance to "locate" the puppy that we were to take home with us. (To be honest, we were actually "just looking" at the time and not sure if we were ready to open our hearts yet to another dog----afraid of "replacing" Sandie. But, she informed us that we never really "replace" a dog, as they remain in our hearts forever.) We weren't even considering taking TWO home with us... let alone THREE, but as she said, "They're like potato chips, you can't have just one!" That IS the truth!

So, our tour continued in the kennel and the dogs ceased their clatter somewhat so we could talk a little more at ease in getting the information that we needed. At the time, there were two litters "ready to go". Sharon pointed to the first litter in one "play pen" and I spotted a little, red sable that looked up at me with those puppy-dog eyes. I immediately picked her up! It was as if we bonded instantly! I KNEW she was the one and I would be spoiling her for the next 20 years, if I had it my way!

Kevin was looking at the other "play pen", though, to see if there was a "better" puppy, fit with the personality in a puppy HE was looking for. Six or seven little, jumpy, colorful and each a little different, puppies were vying for his attention. They were up on their hind legs, clawing at the top of the pen, wagging their tails and smiling in unison. "Pick me!! PICK MEEE!!" That was when we chose THREE that were "POSSIBILITIES" (as the other four were already taken)! It's a good thing that the decision making process was already cut in half. So, we took ALL THREE from that pen and the red sable out of the other to play with each other for hours, it seemed, in the nice, lush grass in front of the house. It was getting later in the afternoon, so it was a little cooler, but we had our hands full running around after all four of them... who were exploring the GREAT OUTDOORS! We watched carefully how they interacted with each other and with us "humans" as well as how their personality was in regards to exploring on their own and their playfulness. Kevin noticed ONE in particular: a chocolate, dapple female that really seemed to have it ALL... playfulness, a laid-back attitude as well as great interaction with her other siblings AND the red sable. (As it was, these two had the same FATHER, Brock, but different mothers: Lady Bug and Lacey Dawn).

Although Kevin's observation was obvious to him, we were still considering this ONE other puppy that Sharon called an "Isabella". She was a "DIVA" and would be the leader of the pack, Sharon advised. We had never heard of that type of Dachshund and she was such an unusual color of blond, with eyes a hue like the ocean in Jamaica----clear BLUE!

So, we were torn. We knew we wanted the little 12 week old red sable (well, I did), but weren't sure of the other ONE? TWO!? Yes... we were considering THREE at that time. Sharon told us that "we don't choose the puppy, but the puppy chooses YOU". Before that experience, I had no idea that was REALLY the case. I was convinced, though, after my initial bonding with my "Bela". I felt "complete" again with her in my arms and knew we belonged together. (Later, I found out that Kevin felt that bonding experience with the chocolate dapple).

We went home without ANY puppies that night and decided to sleep on it and "think it over" before hastily making a decision that would be "lifelong" for at least the puppy! We intended on getting ONE puppy at some point, but after giving it some thought, two puppies only made sense to us... so they could play together and bond as sisters at the same time growing up! Three puppies, at that time DID NOT make sense 'cause we only had TWO laps.

The next day we phoned Sharon and asked if she could bring the red sable and the chocolate dapple to us when she came to town the next day to drop off another puppy at the airport that she had found a loving home for via the internet. I remember how anxious and excited I was that morning and it all was such a wonderful day when we all were united at lunch time as Kevin came home from work to find his two, little girls---"Bela" & "Fleck" (named after a famous, world renown BANJOIST: Bela (BAY-Lah) Fleck --and the Flecktones) who had remembered him (or was it just how friendly and loving they were to everyone??) by smothering him with kisses all over his face!!

We watched them grow over these past four years and they have added so much to our lives. They are our "DOG-TERS" and we love them like we would our own children (of which we have none). They are so spoiled and pretty much run the household... or at least THEY DID, until this past March 2007 when their "sister", Vessie Voo (Vestal---named after another great Banjoist: Scott Vestal and "Vestal Virgin"---due to a 2007 trip to Italy) arrived. She is simply the DIVA and Alpha dog in our house now, although she is much younger. Bela and Fleck really have taken to her, although at first, we were worried that they wouldn't know what to do with this "thing" that kept biting on their tails and noses as well as taking over “mommy's... aka THEIR lap”!

Vestal is now 9 months old and is such a gem. She is an English cream and her mother is the same mother as Fleckie's mother: Lady Bug! We knew that any puppy from "Bug's" litter would be special and when she was "supposedly" on her last litter, we asked, begged, pleaded and put in a special word above requesting another lovely little girl to add to our already Doxie-LOVING household. Our wish was granted and as blessed as we were with the two.... we were highly anticipating the third's arrival. (Vessie's father is "Duke".)

This time, I got to see "our baby" at one WEEK old (I could have seen her born if I had been available as Sharon called me on that morning to be a part of the birthing experience) and watch her progress as she was weaned from Lady Bug in the weeks to follow. Sharon was so wonderful to let me/us visit any time we wanted to and that I did! I drove to Rockdale 5 times before we took her home during the weaning phase. I truly think that our bonding started at that first week mark even though Vestal could not hear or see me (their ears and eyes are not open till two+ weeks after birth) but she could smell me and sense me. She has developed into a spunky, loving and cuddly little addition to the family. They all sleep on top of each other (and ME) in our king sized bed and play--all together at times and separately, too! Their temperaments are perfect! They seem to be very happy (unless we are going out the door without them) and keep each other company. They share everything and have never had any sort of aggression toward each other or any human. They are great watchdogs and bark when they SHOULD... at strangers and the doorbell, but are really the precious little babies that any mother would dote over! Of course, they each have their own little personalities and idiosyncrasies, but a mother wouldn't reveal anything to hinder the angelic ideals people have of their children, so I won't go there, but overall... if you give them the attention that they deserve, they will do anything at all in this world to make you happy and be on their best behavior.

All three are so intelligent, yet stubborn, too, like all Dachshunds tend to be. The two have been to "Puppy Head Start" school and graduated "cuma sum laude" complete with hat, tassel and diploma (see photos on this site). The "tricks" that they know are many, but the training was really for us to learn how they think and that consistency is the key! We have adapted all the lessons that we learned in the school (via PetSmart) to training Vestal and it has worked well.

To anyone that is interested in "completing their family", "The Long and the Short of It" kennel is the place to get your puppy from. Sharon is a close, wonderful friend to our family now and our girls know her as "GRANDMA"... remembering her each time she visits or we take them to see her. There is nothing that she wouldn't do for us, or us for her, and our little clan. She has helped in giving us advice and love throughout the years to the questions we asked. Thank you, Sharon, from the bottom of our "paws", uh; I mean hearts, for everything! You have been sent from Above... we know that! Please use our name and email as references any time and I will FILL the perspective "dog owners' " inbox with hundreds of thousands of photos to show our babies' personalities and growth throughout the years. (By the way.... Sharon's hubby, Terry, is a gem, too! We love him equally and know that he has a hand in the wonderful dispositions the dogs have that come from their kennel! THANK YOU, Terry!!!! We love you both! )

Trish and Kevin, Pflugerville, Texas

Dear Sharon,

Dear Sharon,

I am writing to let you know how wonderful it has been to have all three doxies in our household. We were devastated when we lost Molly at 16 1/2 years. The last 4 years had been such a battle to keep her healthy and happy but she finally left us on her own.

We were beyond any measure of grief when I found your ad in the newspaper. John and I came over the next day, as the house was just empty. You were so kind to us and just made us feel so much better that day. Then you allowed us to get Megan from you even though you were going to keep her and had such a deep love for her already. I have since found out how much Megan meant to you and I thank you for letting her go. It meant the world to us at the time to get her. Since then we have become wonderful friends and the loss has blossomed into a new family for us. I am writing this to let anyone know that once they buy a dog from you, you become a family member as well. You have always been there to help out in any problems I have had with the dogs with advice as well as compassion.

We now own two red dapples and a black and tan dapple. This was always my dream to get a small tiny black and tan dapple, you came through and now I own her. It really is true that dachshunds are a pack animal. We held out as long as 6 months before we realized that dachshunds need a playmate. I have never in my life laughed so much and just thoroughly enjoyed dogs as I have after we got the third dog.

It is even more amazing to see how puppies and adults dogs remember you and your family with such love and adoration when they come back to visit.

To anyone wanting a good recommendation for a breeder, I am telling you now, trust you instinct when buying from Sharon. She will treat you right and even adopt you as an extended family if you so desire. You are getting a good quality dog as well as a friend who will help you through the puppy stages with lots of advice and help if you need it. Thank you my dear friend for being here when we so badly needed the help after Molly past away. We thought we could never love another dog as we did her, but it seems we have found our hearts in all three of them.

Linda

Here is another letter...

I am very happy with Danke.  She is staying very small and starting to get her long-hair and "feathers".  Her temperament is wonderful and she has fit in with the family perfectly.  I would be happy to recommend your dogs to anyone in the future.

Thanks again,

Hello.

I hope you and your family are well. Sorry it has taken me so long to get to you. "Giles" the dapple boy is doing just wonderful. We love him to pieces. He is a really, really easy puppy. Dare I say he was already potty trained. He's only had one accident and lets us know when he has to go. I am amazed by how obedient and just all around excellent his temperament is. I took him for a walk around the neighborhood for the first time the other night. He just loved it. He kept "posing" and prancing and made everyone stop in their tracks to greet him. He is a show stopper. My husband and I had such a great time visiting your kennel and seeing all the dachshunds. He definitely wants a wire hair now! You will definitely see us again in the future. I was so impressed and so pleased with Giles (he is amazing) I won't adopt another dachshund from anyone else. I will be sure to keep you posted. I wanted to send some pics but he keeps sticking his nose on the camera lens, it's hilarious.

Thanks so much for our wonderful baby!

Jasper and the Unbaked Yeast Rolls ---  Too Good of a story to not share!

We have a fox terrier
[could have been a doxie, too! ---Sharon] by the name of Jasper.  He came to us in the summer of 2001 from the fox terrier rescue program.  For those of you, who are unfamiliar with this type of adoption, imagine taking in a 10 year old child whom you know nothing about and committing to doing your best to be a good parent.  Like a child, the dog came with his own idiosyncrasies.  He will only sleep on the bed, on top of the covers, nuzzled as close to my face as he can get without actually performing a French kiss on me.  Lest you think this is a bad case of 'no discipline,' I should tell you that Perry and I tried every means to break him of this habit including locking him in a separate bedroom for several nights.  The new door cost over $200.  But I digress.
Five weeks ago we began remodeling our house. Although the cost of the project is downright obnoxious, it was 20 years overdue AND it got me out of cooking Thanksgiving for family, extended family, and a lot of friends that I like more than family most of the time.  I was assigned the task of preparing 124 of my famous yeast dinner rolls for the two Thanksgiving feasts we did attend.
I am still cursing the electrician for getting the new oven hooked up so quickly.  It was the only  appliance in the whole darn house that worked, thus the assignment.  I made the decision to cook the rolls on Wed. evening to reheat Thurs. am.  Since the kitchen was freshly painted, you can imagine the odor.  Not wanting the rolls to smell like Sherwin Williams latex paint #586, I put the rolls on baking sheets and set them in the living room to rise for 5 hours.  After 3 hours, Perry and I decided to go out to eat, returning in about an hour.  An hour later the rolls were ready to go in the oven.
It was 8:30 PM.  When I went to the living room to retrieve the pans, much to my shock one whole pan of 12 rolls was empty.  I called out to Jasper and my worst nightmare became a reality.  He literally wobbled over to me.  He looked like a combination of the Pillsbury dough boy and the Michelin Tire man wrapped up in fur. He groaned when he walked.  I swear even his cheeks were bloated.
I ran to the phone and called our vet.  After a few seconds of uproarious laughter, he told me the dog would probably be OK, however, I needed to give him Pepto Bismol every 2 hours for the rest of the night.  God only knows why I thought a dog would like Pepto Bismol any more than my kids did when they were sick.  Suffice it to say that by the time we went to bed the dog was black, white and pink.  He was so bloated we had to lift him onto the bed for the night.  Naively thinking the dog would be all better by morning was very stupid on my part.
We arose at 7:30 A.M. and as we always do first thing; put the dog out to relieve himself.  Well, the darn dog was as drunk as a sailor on his first leave.  He was running into walls, falling flat on his butt and most of the time when he was walking his front half was going one direction and the other half was either dragging the grass or headed 90 degrees in another direction. He couldn't lift his leg to pee, so he would just walk and pee at the same time.  When he ran down the small incline in our back yard he couldn't stop himself and nearly ended up running into the fence. His pupils were dilated and he was as dizzy as a loon.  I endured another few seconds of laughter from the vet (second call within 12 hours) before he explained that the yeast had fermented in his belly and that he was indeed drunk.  He assured me that, not unlike most binges we humans go through, it would wear off after about 4 or 5 hours and to keep giving him Pepto Bismol.
Afraid to leave him by himself in the house, Perry and I loaded him up and took him with us to my sister's house for the first Thanksgiving meal of the day.  My sister lives outside of Muskogee on a ranch, (10 to 15 minute drive).  Rolls firmly secured in the trunk (124 less 12) and drunk dog leaning from the back seat onto the console of the car between Perry and I, we took off.  Now I know you probably don't believe that dogs burp, but believe me when I say that after eating a tray of risen unbaked yeast rolls, DOGS WILL BURP.  These burps were pure Old Charter.  They would have matched or beat any smell in a drunk tank at the police station.  But that's not the worst of it.  Now he was beginning to fart and they smelled like baked rolls.  God strike me dead if I am not telling the truth! We endured this for the entire trip to Karen's, thankful she didn't live any further away than she did.
Once Jasper was firmly placed in my sister's garage with the door locked, we finally sat down to enjoy our first Thanksgiving meal of the day. The dog was the topic of conversation all morning long and everyone made trips to the garage to witness my drunken dog, each returning with a tale of Jasper's latest endeavor to walk without running into something.  Of course, as the old adage goes, "what goes in must come out" and Jasper was no exception.  Granted if it had been me that had eaten 12 risen, unbaked yeast rolls, you might as well have put a concrete block up my behind, but alas a dog's digestive system is quite different from yours or mine.   I discovered this was a mixed blessing when we prepared to leave Karen's house.  Having discovered his "packages" on the garage floor, we loaded him up in the car so we could hose down the floor.
This was another naive decision on our part... The blast of water from the hose hit the poop on the floor and the poop on the floor withstood the blast from the hose. It was like Portland cement beginning to set up and cure.  We finally tried to remove it with a shovel.  I (obviously no one else was going to offer their services) had to get on my hands and knees with a coarse brush to get the remnants off of the floor.  And as if this wasn't degrading enough, the darn dog in his drunken state had walked through the poop and left paw prints all over the garage floor that had to be brushed too.
Well, by this time the dog was sobering up nicely so we took him home and dropped him off before we left for our second Thanksgiving dinner at Perry's sister's house.  I am happy to report that as of today (Monday) the dog is back to normal both in size and temperament.  He has had a bath and is no longer tricolor.  None the worse for wear I presume.  I am also happy to report that just this evening I found 2 risen unbaked yeast rolls hidden inside my closet door.
It appears he must have come to his senses after eating 10 of them but decided hiding 2 of them for later would not be a bad idea.  Now, I'm doing research on the computer as to: "How to clean unbaked dough from the Carpet."

And how was your day?
